The Inside Story

We have discussed many examples where the three terms, time-resolved, in-situ and non-ambient, are all operating together; but we have also seen cases where only one of these terms, either time-resolved or non-ambient, is involved. Here we will look at some cases where the experiment could be described as only in-situ, that is a static analysis at room temperature/pressure. Basically we are referring here to an analysis which looks at the inside of materials without actually breaking them up, or non-destructive analysis as it is often referred to. There have been many attempts to characterise the interior of bulk objects using X-ray and neutron radiation, covering a variety of methodologies such as stress/strain-, crystallite size-, fluorescence- and absorption-scanning. The benefits of being able to examine the interior of objects are fairly obvious. The following two pages will deal with two examples.
