Chapter 11
Aims & Objectives
The aim of this chapter is to introduce you to the idea of identification
from powder diffraction patterns and to provide some basic familiarisaton
with the international database on powder diffraction (ICDD-PDF).
The objectives are as follows:
-
To work our way through an introductory example on how an unknown material
can be identified from its diffraction pattern.
-
To look at the basic features of the ICDD powder diffraction database. For
many, if not all, of you this database will not be available since its use is
commercial requiring a subscription. However by kind permission of the ICDD
some representative portions of the database have been included in the course
material, enabling us to work our way through illustrative problems. However,
you are still bound by its copyright (a statement to which is carried on each
section of their data) and therefore you must not copy, publish or use this
database outside this course (unless of course you decide to subscribe).
-
Some introduction is given to the pitfalls, problems and the more
sophisticated methods of identification ("search-match").
-
Finally a more tricky question, involving multiple phases, is introduced.
The first part of its solution is tackled using the permitted portions of
the ICCD-PDF database included. The methodology for the second and
third parts of its solution is introduced but not completed since the
intention is to return to this problem as part of a later assignment.
As previously the author advises that Qualitative Analysis be read
sequentially starting at the beginning with
A Taster.
