Discussion of Marks for Assignment 4 between JKC & MV on 7 May 2003

As with previous marking of this assignment, very few differences were found. Consequently, only differences are listed below:

Bruce Henry Csorba

Q1. 1 mark allocated by JKC to part (b) since explanation given (although brief) (MV had awarded 1/2 mark)

Nikos Kourkoumelis

(No differences)

Oladipo Omotoso

(No differences)

Elliot Owens

Q1. 1/2 mark deducted by MV for part (d) since no explanation given (JKC had awarded 1 mark)

Katharine Pile

(No differences)

Dmitry Strusevich

Q1. 1 mark given by MV for part (d) since explanation given (although brief) (JKC had awarded 1/2 mark)
Q3. 1/2 mark deduced by MV in part (iii) since example missing (JKC had awarded 1 mark)

ACTION

After discussions between JKC and MV, the following actions were agreed:

Student marked work adjusted accordingly (with revised comments where appropriate).
[DONE by JKC 7/5/03]

In addition, most of the contentious marking seemed to involve Q1 where only 1 mark is currently given for both an answer and an explanation. Suggestion is that the question be rewritten so as to encourage slightly longer answers (as given by student O.Omotoso) and that 2 marks are awarded for each part (with 2 marks for full answer, 1 mark for partial answer, and no marks for wrong answer).
[TO BE DONE]

In addition, the example of tartaric acid should be added in to the course material.
