This planar anion has a single fourfold axis through the central platinum atom with 4 twofold axes perpendicular to the fourfold, a point of inversion, plus 5 mirror planes, and a -4 axis.

The point group symmetry for this molecule is given the crystallographic symbol 4/m 2/m 2/m, which is usually shortened to 4/m m m.
