Aims & Objectives

This is the first of three chapters on the subject of modern techniques and applications. The aim of the first two of these chapters is to present some of the modern techniques that have been applied to the in-situ time-resolved diffraction of polycrystalline materials under non-ambient conditions. The full literature on this subject is far too divergent to review in full but by selection a representative picture can be gained.

The objectives for this first part are:

• To define the terms: time-resolved diffraction, in-situ study and non-ambient conditions.
• To review the currents state of detectors, particularly X-ray detectors, as used in time-resolved diffraction.
• To quickly look at the application of temperature variation (both high and low temperature) on its own.
• To look in more depth at the history of high pressure research, as a case of non-ambient conditions, together with some current examples.
• It is not so vital that the various parts be read sequentially, though it is still recommended that you start at the beginning: 3 terms and a global look.
