- Problem Set

Wolfgang
Seidl
(my
first internet page I have created on my own ever!)
First as you wished a small
"self-portrait", which was taken at my last holiday in september 2000 at the
east sea in a sailing boat. Title of the photograph could be: "Me buying the
boat via handy! There is just a small problem, the money!"

I have to apologize for the size of the photograph, but I
thought you should get a little more than just a crazy self-portrait, done in a
DIY-photoautomate somewhere in a railway station.

My personal interest are:
I like various computer games, especially strategy and
simulations, due to my history as passionate roleplayer for more than 15 years.
These substitute hours of watching senseless quiz shows and soaps, like
BigBrother on television. Free hours in the evening are also filled up with
books. Mostly I read fantasy and sience fiction, for example Tolkienīs "The Lord
of the Ring" is one the novels I like most.
Scuba diving is the summer activity, with the slight problem to
find a suitable lake in Bavaria with sufficient clear water, at least some
fishes and ambient temperature not to freeze to an ice block after half an hour
in the water, even in summer.
Finally and most important my girlfriend, who also became a
chemist, but has her working interests in organics and biochemistry.
More could be written down, but I think these are sufficient
informations. If there are more questions, please ask.
My aims for the PD course are:
- As I stated in the application formular I am working as an
PhD student. But this is not a guarantee to get the knowledge of how powder
diffraction works in detail. Fact is, that the person in our working group who
is responsible for the PD is not so capable to teach me the things I need for
my work.
- Next point why I signed for the course is the possibility of
learning how to work with Rietveld. This is the most important necessity for
my work on layered silicates with Dr. Breu. With the Rietveld method we can
gain a lot more information about how our system looks like and how it could
ideally look like. There is a lot of different public domain software
accessible, but without a detailed introduction it takes a lot of time and
effort to get the wanted work done, if it is possible in the end!
- Another important point is, that a course via the internet
opens the opportunity for me to learn more about the internet, get some real
experience with how to create an internet page, work with the composer,
include graphics and so on.
- Also the certificate after the exam could help me in finding
a job later on when I have finished my studies. Maybe some of the people are
surprised by doing this via the internet, which is not very popular here in
germany. Our universities don't like this very much they prefer the good old
lectures, but in my opinion the companies are surely interested in such a
matter.
