My Interests

Outside of 'work' my main intesest is Advanced Driving. In 1986 I took a course of advanced driving lessons with the St.Helens Group of Advanced Motorists - a voluntary Group that is affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists. I passed the Advanced Test and became an 'Observer' with the Group. This involves giving advice on good driving technique to members of the public with the aim of they too passing the advanced test. I am still involved in this capacity and over the years I have held several positions in the Group - formally Group Chairman and Training Officer and now Group Vice- President, Publicity Officer and Newsletter editor.

I am a member of the Mahatma Magic Circle, Liverpool. I have dabbled with conjuring from childhood and my particular specialism is card magic. I am certainly not in the league of Paul Daniels or David Copperfield but I do perform magic, on occasion, to family and friends.

What I hope to achieve by doing the course

  1. Understand X-ray Diffraction incident and diffracted beam optics
  2. Understand how molecular symmetry can be related to XRD patterns
  3. Gain an appreciation of how high energy X-ray sources work
  4. Understand the theory of stress and texture measurement using XRD
