Course title

Advanced Certificate in Powder Diffraction on the Web

Narrative

This one year Internet based-course provides students with the basic principles of the theory and applications of powder diffraction as a technique for solid-state research.

It is open to applicants with a BSc or equivalent in the physical sciences. The course does not require attendance at lectures in the college, which means that students from any country may follow it at home, work, or at another university. The only equipment required is a Windows-based PC and Web browser.

The course is designed for students particularly interested in the use of crystallographic research techniques for the study of inorganic, organometallic, and organic materials. Students will learn about all aspects of powder diffraction from instrumentation, through various types of data analysis, to the latest methods of structure solution and refinement. Students will also complete an independent project written up in HTML and submitted via the Internet.

The course provides an excellent training for those postgraduate students who are keen to take their careers further in the physical sciences, and is especially suitable for those intending to pursue a PhD in any area of solid-state science, which makes use of powder diffraction.
