Dear Bruce,
I have been looking at your initial project submission. I can see you
have serious problems with the refinement. You need to be able to get
a good fit to the short data set (A) with the orthorhombic space group
Pbnm. Your Pb coordinates look wrong for starters. Check that your initial
model is roughly right before varying the parameters in the way described.
I suspect that the refinement has gone into a false minimum for some
reason since you should be able to get a good fit. You need to get a good
fit to A before starting with B, otherwise your model for B will not be
good enough.
I hope this makes sense. Please come back to me if not. I realise that the
time difference makes communication slow. One possibility is to use the
course chatroom if you like - either early morning or late evening so that
we overlap in time.
Also, I hope that Registry has made the arrangements correctly for the
written paper. The date and time on the paper is set as Wed, 24 Sept 2003
14:30 to 17:30 local time. (This is done so as to avoid confusion with
time zones across continents.)
With best regards,
Jeremy Karl.
