Dear Mark,
Re your query about the silicon sample holder: ours is asymmetrically cut
so that (in theory at least) it should not give any Bragg scattering at all
at any angle. For it to work properly, the surface must be highly polished
so that any "powder" defects due to cutting, misuse, etc. are removed.
There is definitely a texture effect with the data shown - I picked out
the peak at 28.5deg as an example, but I could have picked out other peaks.
The relative intensities are "all over the place" to use a colloquial
expression. I should possibly show a data set collected on an empty Si
sample holder. I should also check our current Si substrates to check that
they haven't deteriated through (mis)use.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying the course,
          Jeremy Karl.
